DVD Audio to Music CD HOWTO

The White Stripes DVD

I recently received a copy of The White Stripes Live under Blackpool Lights on DVD and thoroughly enjoyed listening to it. But what about if I wanted to enjoy the live concert in the comfort of my car when cruising around? Well since they've yet to release a CD version of it, and since I own the DVD, why not take the audio off the DVD and put it on a CD? Sure. Back in the day it was easy to record anything onto a tape, just play it and hit record. But in the world of the digital (being DVD and CD) technology, why not make a much higher quality copy of it. That's what I set out to do, and that's what this guide will explain.

First thing to do would be to get the audio off the DVD, so open up DVD Decrypter, put the DVD in your DVD drive on your computer, select the source and make sure it sees the Label properly. Then click the Mode menu and select IFO (or just press i). Then Select the Stream Processing Tab. You will see what you see below. LPCM is just standard WAV file format, 2 channels is what we need to extract since thats what CD's support, make sure to select Demux (Wrong screenshot last time, RAW also works sometimes) then you can click the DVD->HD icon to begin the process. See Screenshot:

After that's done you should have three files, the WAV we want, an IFO that we need to look at, and a TXT file that shows the streams we saw previously. So now open up IFOEdit and open up the ifo file. You will then see the following:

What this program tells us is all the information about the DVD, what the menus are like, audio, video, chapters, etc. What we need to look at is the chapters, since thats how the dvd is divided into audio tracks. You could just burn the huge .wav file as one large audio cd, but that sucks having to fast forward between songs and such, its not good. So what I have highlighted below is the information we need under the PGC section. See below:

Now time for the really long and sorta difficult part, to divide the single large track into something we can switch between as different tracks we need to specify in nero where to cut. With IFOEdit handy, its simple, if you can get it side by side, great. This is what needs to be done, add the single track onto a new cd, then right click on the track in the audio pane and go to properties, then click the 'Indexes, Splits, and Limits' tab. Now just add indexes by doing the following, split the track, then edit the split and change it to the value in ifoedit. Example of the above first track, 00:01:01.06 is the first track, which would be: Minutes: 1, Seconds: 1, Frames: 6. Just keep doing that down the line and then burn it, should work, any problems contact me and I'll try to help you through.

DVD Decrypter is a program which is used to circumvent copy protection, so make sure you have proper permission to do so in your country, since I licensed the media by purchasing it, I think I legally have the right in the United States to do as above, if not, let me know. Good luck, stay legit, or just don't get caught.
